Our eye examination appointments are scheduled for 45 minutes, to allow us the necessary time to address your individual requirements, not only checking your vision, but examining the health of your eyes. If spectacles or contact lenses are necessary, you will be advised as to what you need them for and how different lenses can suit your needs. If it is necessary to extend the care you require to an eye consultant (ophthalmologist), we will also discuss why this is required and how it will be arranged.

Eye examinations are a very important part of monitoring your general health, as diseases related to high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, hyperthyroid and arthritis can be detected through your eyes. Ocular conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and macula degeneration are usually first diagnosed from a routine eye examination. Early detection and treatment will reduce the overall effect on your eyesight.

We have invested in the Topcon TRC-NW100 Digital Retinal Camera, which allows us to take photographic images of the retina, macula and optic nerve head within the eye. If eye disease is detected, being able to manage and monitor the condition is a vital requirement.

All appointments at Shaw’s Opticians are carried out by Martyn Allen on a daily basis. We do not bring locums in like other practices so you can be guaranteed continuation with the same optician at every visit. This is something that many clients prefer compared to busy high street chains.

We are a registered NHS practice, so those people requiring NHS appointments are very welcome. In fact, the majority of our clients are NHS, so check with us when you call if you are eligible for FREE eye tests and help with your spectacle costs. If you are not eligible, you will be seen as a private client. Costs apply in this case.

Contact Lenses

We will advise you on the best type of contact lenses for you based on your prescription, your needs and the costs. We have several different contact lenses available, from daily disposables and monthlies, to multifocal and lenses for astigmatism. All our lenses are available on a cash-buy basis so you do not have the tie-in that many opticians make you sign up to.

Our lenses are initially available on a trial basis, with all fittings, teaches and aftercares FREE to our clients. If you wish to discuss this with the optometrist, simply book an appointment or telephone to discuss it with us.
